sunday poem #24

Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that I had a beehive
here inside my heart.
And the golden bees
were making white combs
and sweet honey
from my old failures.

2nd stanza of “Last night as I was sleeping” by Antonio Machado (1875-1939) in Bly, R. (1983). (trans). Times alone: selected poems of Antonio Machado. Weslyan University Press, p. 43. image:

  1. “Marvelous error”, this morsel haunted me. Bendita ilusion in the Spanish original is clearer.
But the “Golden bees”, I hear them at night in my dreams, and I taste the honey every day.
