caring for everyone

Posted on

As I go to work today, I’m reminded once more of the Bodhisattva vow to “save all sentient beings.” It may sound rabbit-in-hand1pretentious and impossible, and so it is. What it does, however, is to shape and refine the intention that undergirths my relationship with the world and the main reason why I get up each day. As the Zen teacher and social activist Bernie Glassman puts it:

When you realize the wholeness and interdependence of life, you have to take care of everyone, and to do that, you have to work with every ingredient of life.”
