our tuesday poem (antonio machado)

beehive

Last night as I was sleeping,

I dreamt—marvelous error!—

that I had a beehive

here inside my heart.

And the golden bees

were making white combs

and sweet honey

from my old failures

Last night as I slept

I dreamt—marvelous error!—

that it was God I had

here inside my heart.

second and last stanzas of a poem by Antonio Machado (1875-1939); version by Robert Bly

  1. the contrast between the old failures and sweetness reminds me of the sweet memories that tasted bitter when they happened. If not god in your heart then who? (not that I am religious but the question seems obvious from where you’ve left this one off).

  2. Ah Peter, I needed a Tuesday poem and this one is perfect. My whole day seems like a “marvelous error” never mind that I dreamt.

  3. isn’t that what the poet gives us? reminders and forshadowing, encouragement and understanding … all in language that transcends expectations, definitions, limitations. Peace be upon them!

And both of you, Christoper and Terrill.
