voting for lager

beer.jpgYesterday I mentioned the ban on alcohol sales on election days. At least one beer-loving foreigner is unhappy. His letter in today’s Bangkok Post reads (in part): “I’m totally disgusted by the alcohol ban … it poses another disaster for tourism [compared to Tsunami catastrophe]. It means tourists will never want to come to Thailand during the holiday season again. … They reserved air tickets and hotels, spending thousands of dollars … Tourism here is already in a mess, why does the government want to make it worse?”

Several TV commentators (e.g., Deutsche Welle, Aljazzeras, BBC World) view high voter turnout at advance pools as evidence of customary vote-buying. Pictures showe large contingents of factory workers and members of the military arriving at polling stations en masse, with transportation provided by their employers. Most “ordinary” people are either ill informed or uninterested re election issues (nothing new there).
